Hawaii's Kohala Coast | |
A vacation on the Kohala Coast is more than a sojourn in a tropical paradise. It’s a visit to the boundary of past and present—a place where the drama of nature and human history is exquisitely preserved in the landscape and the culture. Near the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, Hawaii’s first king, and now home to an abundance of top-of-the-line resorts, this exquisite coastline on the northern side of the Big Island beautifully combines a richly picturesque past with the luxuries and comforts of contemporary travel. From its sheltered reefs to its preserved petroglyphs and lively luaus, the Kohala Coast is authentic Hawaii. Part of what makes the Kohala Coast so unique is the ancient history that is still present today. It was here that early Hawaiians paused in their passage across the land to etch images and symbols into the cooling lava—petroglyphs that are preserved and treasured as the island’s earliest form of written language. Travel along the Ali Kahakai (King’s Trail) and etchings of animals and ancient gods come to life. And throughout the Big Island, heiau (temples) of ancient chiefs still dot the landscape, including King Kamehameha I’s palace along the waterfront in old Kona. Even the world-class resorts that line the Kohala Coast embrace and showcase their Hawaiian heritage. From their welcoming service to their traditional luaus, outrigger kayaks, delectable dining and restorative spa treatments, resorts like the Hapuna Prince, Mauna Lani Beach Hotel, the Fairmont Orchid and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel embody the Hawaiian spirit of ‘aloha.’ Nature, too, is part of the island’s story. The largest and the youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, the Big Island is a living lesson in island-making, with long lava fields sloping down to the blue ocean, snow-capped mountains, active volcanoes and lush valleys with spectacular waterfalls. Birds and plants isolated by the surrounding water and protected from predators evolved in Hawaii as unique species. Today, a hike through the Waipio Valley, a sunrise visit to the more than 13,000 foot Mauna Kea volcano, or a visit to Akaka Falls, one of the island’s highest waterfalls, reveal life forms, minerals and panoramic beauty not to be found anywhere else. But in contrast to other parts of the island, the Kohala Coast is sheltered to the west of high mountains and gets very little rain—just a few inches a year—and cooling breezes even on the hottest days. The area’s year-round sunny weather and stunning natural scenery make it ideal for outdoor adventures. And the island’s beaches are some of the best in the world. Try Mauna Kea Beach for relaxing, the gently sloping Hapuna Beach for swimming and boogie boarding and Kealakekua Bay for the best snorkeling. If you are heading to Mauna Kea Beach, we recommend you go early in the morning to claim a parking spot. Whatever you choose to explore, you’ll find that the Kohala Coast preserves the authentic flavor of Hawaii’s Polynesian roots. Today, through music, stories, dance and exploration, visitors to this amazing landscape can capture the flavor of the past—amidst the delicious luxuries of the present day.
