 For families Maui’s many superb family beaches include Wailea Beach and nearby Palauea Beach, as well as golden Kapalua Bay Beach. Kauai’s Poipu Beach is landscaped with lava boulders that create a sheltered pool with still, shallow water. Windward Oahu’s long, scenic Kailua Beach Park is a great place for picnics and ideal for windsurfing. On the Big Island, Hapuna Beach State Park is rarely crowded and offers shade, picnic tables and good snorkeling around the rocks at the north end. For swimming Spectacularly photogenic, Oahu’s Lanikai Beach is a mile of golden sand considered to be the best swimming beach in Hawaii. Waimanalo is also a local favorite, ideal for bodysurfing, boogie boarding and swimming. Sheltered Anaehoomalu Beach is one of the best recreational beaches on the Big Island. On Hawaii's west side, Hapuna Bay, offers ideal swimming and boogie boarding conditions, plus abundant fish and coral, superb for snorkeling. And tucked away in Wainapanapa Park, near the end of the “Road to Hana” on Maui, is a black sand beach and serene cove perfect for swimming, snorkeling or exploring the volcanic rock caves. For scenery & romance On Kauai’s north shore, Hanalei Bay is scooped out of waterfalls and white sand – possibly the most beautiful beach setting in Hawaii. Wend your way down to Kauai’s Lumahai Beach and find yourself in the gorgeous landscape of the movie “South Pacific.” Gaze across the Auau Channel from Maui’s Kaanapali Beach to see why it was voted “Beach with the Best Sunset.” Feeling energetic? Hike three miles to Hawaii’s remote Green Sand Beach where olivine, a rare volcanic crystal, sparkling blue water and frothing surf create spectacular surroundings. And for day and night dazzle, Oahu’s famous Waikiki Beach is a postcard in motion: sensational people-watching, friendly, learn-to-surf waves, and a grassy park shaded with palms and banyan trees. For Snorkeling Hanauma Bay on Oahu is sheltered in the crater of an ancient volcano, rich with sea life and ideal for snorkelers of all ages. Picturesque Kee Beach, on Kauai’s North shore, is the best snorkeling spot in the island – and be sure to stay for the dazzling sunset! Lanai’s exquisite Hulopoe Beach Park is a jewelbox of colorful fish and stunningly clear water. Punaluu Black Sand Beach, on the south coast of the Big Island, is a sanctuary for green sea turtles, with very scenic snorkeling. On the rocky reefs of Maui’s Kamaole Beach Parks, lucky snorkelers can see sea turtles and parrot fish – also a good spot for whale viewing. For Surfing Though resident surfers all have a favorite spot, Oahu’s North Shore is the mecca of big wave surfing, and Sunset Beach, Banzai Pipeline, Waimea Bay, and Haleiwa Beach Park are among the world’s most famous – and certainly most scenic – surfing spots.
