Guided Tour, River Cruise or Independent Travel: How to Choose for Your First Trip to Europe
If you've decided you're excited to visit Europe and you want someone else to handle the logistics, you'll hit the same fork in the road almost everyone does: guided tour, river cruise, or independent travel? Regardless of the way you chose to travel - having a travel advisor to help you plan is the best way to go!
All three feel very different day to day, and the right choice depends less on the brochure than on how you like to travel.
I've traveled Europe all three ways: a Globus guided tour, a Scenic river cruise on the Danube, a Viking Cruise on the Rhine, and countless trips on my own: London, Paris, Rome, Florence and more. So here's my honest comparison.
What a guided tour is
On a guided tour with a company like Globus or CIE Tours, you travel by comfortable motorcoach between cities and regions. A tour director stays with you the whole trip, gets to know you and handles everything from hotel check-ins to restaurant recommendations. For most guided trips, local guides join you in each city and making it as seamless as jumping from city to city can be.
You stay in hotels, usually for one to three nights each, and move on from there. Your luggage is handled for you, but you will pack and unpack as you go - which makes it a little more challenging.
What a river cruise is
On a river cruise, the ship is your hotel. You unpack once, and the towns come to you. Most days you dock in a new place, take a guided walking tour or planned excursions, and have free time before the ship sails on.
The whole trip follows the river, so you see towns and countryside along the water: the Danube, the Rhine, the Seine, and others.
What independent travel is
On an independent trip, I build the whole itinerary around the two of you: hotels, trains, airport transfers, and the tours and experiences worth booking ahead. You get everything in one place before you leave, with every confirmation and ticket organized. And we talk about how to handle hiccups in destination before you depart.
Then the days are yours. There's no group and no tour director, and nobody to remind you when the bus leaves. You set the pace, you choose where to linger, and you find your own way between the things I've booked on your behalf.
The questions that usually decide it
How do you feel about packing? If the thought of repacking every couple of days makes you tired, that points toward a river cruise. On a tour or an independent trip, you'll change hotels as you go, though on an independent trip you can choose to stay longer in fewer places.
Is the place you've dreamed about on a river? This one settles it for a lot of people. Italy, Ireland, and much of Spain aren't river cruise destinations, so a guided tour or an independent trip is usually the better way to see them. However, if you're not trying to cross sights off your list, the Rhine, the Danube, and Normandy are a natural fit for experiencing Europe at ease - on a river cruise.
How much ground do you want to cover? A tour can take you deeper inland and to more varied places, like mountains, countryside, and major cities, all in one trip. A river cruise covers less ground at a slower pace. An independent trip covers exactly as much as you want, which is often less than you'd think. I'm rarely going to plan more than 3 cities in one trip.
What's your pace? Tours tend to have earlier mornings and more time on the road between stops. River cruises have more built-in downtime: afternoons on deck, sailing through scenery, naps without guilt. Independent travel runs on your clock entirely, whether that means a slow breakfast or a three-hour lunch (and I highly recommend both).
How are your feet? All three involve walking, since European towns are built on cobblestones. Tours and river cruises typically offer options for different mobility levels, but tours are a lot faster paced overall. On a river cruise, 'home' is always a short walk away. On an independent trip, a taxi is always an option, and you can rest whenever you like.
How comfortable are you on your own? This is the big one for independent travel. You'll be finding your train platform, ordering from menus that may not be in English, and handling the small hiccups yourself. If that sounds like part of the adventure, independent travel is wonderful. If it sounds stressful, a tour or a river cruise will let you relax more, especially on a first trip.
What they have in common
Any way you pick way, you won't have a dozen open browser tabs and 200 decisions to make. The research, the booking, and the logistics are done before you leave and I make sure you feel as comfortable and confident as possible before departure.
On a tour or a river cruise, you also won't be standing on a corner trying to translate a bus schedule. Language worries mostly disappear because your guides speak English, and safety concerns ease because someone who knows the place is looking out for you.
On an independent trip, you'll do more of that navigating yourself. But you won't be doing it unprepared. You'll know where you're going, how to get there, and who to call if something goes sideways.
That's the part that matters most. The best choice is the one that lets you relax enough to enjoy it.
Who each suits
A guided tour suits you if: you want to see a lot of variety, your dream destination is inland (Italy, Ireland, the Swiss Alps), and you don't mind moving hotels - A LOT.
A river cruise suits you if: you want to unpack once, you like a slower pace with scenery built in, and your wish list includes river towns and countryside. Not big sights like the Colosseum.
Independent travel suits you if: you've been to Europe before, or you're confident finding your way, and you want the freedom to change your mind about lunch without consulting a group.
Any of them suits you if: you've been putting Europe off because planning it yourselves felt like too much.
And if you're not quite sure - that's where I come in. Let's chat about which way to see Europe is right for you.

10-Year-Anniversary Italy Dream Trip!
Jessica Pratt was phenomenal in helping us plan our 10-year anniversary trip to Italy! She made the whole process so easy and even provided day-of support while we were on the trip and things changed. We're so grateful to her and would highly recommend her services! ---The Stumps
First Viking River Cruise - easy and stress-free
Jessica Pratt was incredibly helpful in planning our first Viking River Cruise. She made the entire process feel easy and stress-free, helping us coordinate all the important details, including our airfare, an extended stay in Amsterdam, and an excursion that we ultimately chose to arrange independently rather than through Viking. What really stood out was Jessica’s communication and attention to detail. She kept us informed of any potential changes or concerns, especially regarding the low water levels on the Rhine and how they might affect our trip. Knowing she was monitoring the situation and keeping us updated gave us great peace of mind. We truly appreciated Jessica’s guidance, professionalism, and personal attention throughout the planning process. She helped make our first river cruise experience something we could look forward to rather than worry about. We highly recommend Jessica to anyone planning a cruise or vacation!

Hawaii Anniversary Trip - Stress Free
Until now, I have never used a travel agent. I may never go back to planning things myself....EVER. Jessica Pratt, Hawaii expert, could not describe her any more perfectly. She has been so incredible. From our very first call she was intent on making sure she understood us as clients in order to build the perfect anniversary trip! She thinks of EVERYTHING. First International Trip was a Dream
My family and I have never been out of the country and we were referred to Jessica Pratt by a mutual friend, and to say she has went above and beyond would be an understatement!!! I have asked soooo many questions and even had to change our dates (after booking) she never hesitated and had so much useful info we would have never even thought to ask about ! I 100% recommend Jessica Pratt!!! -Brittany & Kyle
Paris Anniversary Perfection
Thank you for your hard work on our anniversary trip to Paris. It was absolutely fabulous in every way. It was a perfect balance of planned activities and free time to roam and explore. The hotel you recommended was so perfect. The location was ideal and I highly recommend it as well. You're right - buying tickets in advance for important activities is the only way to go - but also finding some amazing gems while roaming the streets - true perfection. Picking a favorite is so hard. --- Heather
Italy was a Dream Trip
It was so wonderful to have an Italian guide who shared so much history throughout! Not only did he talk about the historical sites, but we also learned about the farmland, lifestyles and so much more during our travel from city to city! In one day, we were able to see the Colosseum and the Vatican because of our private bus and the skip-the-line tours that were reserved for us. We could have never done that on our own. Lines were wrapped around every building and most of those sites limit how many people enter each day so tickets are difficult to get. We added days on before and after the tour. Jessica handled EVERY DETAIL (scheduled our hotels, train rides and provided transfers) which would have taken me days to research and plan out. She checked on us throughout our trip to make sure it was everything we had dreamed of. And it was! -- Emily
Amazing first time at Secrets Maroma Beach
Jessica Pratt planned the best vacation for our family! We went to Secrets Maroma Beach Cancun in July 2024. We had never been out of the country before so we had no idea how to plan a trip. She made it so easy because she did EVERYTHING, from the minute we arrived at the airport to leave until we arrived at the airport to come home and even more. She gave us details for the entire week we would be gone! We all know vacations can have bumps in them that cannot be avoided but they can be especially scary when you're out of the country! We had an emergency situation while we were there and Jessica was just a call away and was texting with me throughout the day and even into the night when we made it back to our resort! She held our hand the entire way. Jessica absolutely made our time away amazing even when there were bumps! We will absolutely be using her again! -- Shannon T
Dream Hawaiian Vacation
We just got back from a dream vacation in Hawaii!! We are so thankful to Jessica!! She listened and took into account our families wants and planned according!! We had the perfect mix of super fun activities and relaxing by the pool and beach!! (She didn’t even get mad when I forgot the time difference and texted her at 1am 😬) we can’t wait to start planning our next adventure with her!!❤️ ---Danae S
Italy Babymoon was amazing
Jessica Pratt is the best. She is very helpful even when there is a 7+ hour time difference between us. Very grateful for her being our travel agent. -- Ashtin B.

The first trip we planned was easy because we had taken cruises before but the second trip, Disney (Orlando, Florida), we were out of our comfort zone. Jessica guided us along the way making sure we were able to plan a great trip in a very short timeframe with COVID limitations on top of all of it. -Jessica J.

Jessica was awesome to work with. She was very helpful and patient with me as my plans changed multiple times before the final trip was booked. We had a great trip (Hyatt Regency Coconut Point, Naples, Florida) and will be using Jessica again in the future. -Coconut Point

And if you're not quite sure - that's where I come in. Let's chat about which way to see Europe is right for you.
The months before a first trip to Europe (or a first in a long time) can feel a little stressful if you don't have someone guiding you through what to expect.
Here's the checklist I walk my clients through, plus the things you can cross off your worry list entirely.
Three to Six months before you go
Check your passport, then check it again. Look at the expiration date now, not the week before you leave. I always recommend that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your departure date, to avoid any entry hiccups at all. If yours is close, renew it now!
Look up the new entry requirements. Europe has been rolling out new border systems, including biometric registration at entry and a travel authorization called ETIAS. These new requirements continue to be expected and then delayed.
Buy travel insurance. If you didn't at the time you booked your trip. Especially for a trip you've waited years to take. I'll just leave that here.
Plan to arrive a day early. This is the one I push hardest. Flights get delayed, bags take the scenic route, and jet lag is real. Arriving the day before your cruise turns a missed connection into a minor story instead of a missed ship.
One month before
Call your bank and credit card company. Let them know you'll be traveling, and bring at least one credit card with no foreign transaction fees. I recommend traveling with two in case of hiccups.
Get a small amount of euros. Enough for a coffee, a restroom, or a small shop that doesn't take cards at each stop. You don't need much. (On an all-inclusive river cruise, you'll need even less).
Sort out your phone. Check your carrier's international plan!
Refill prescriptions. Pack medications in your carry-on with a few extra days' supply, and keep a copy of your prescriptions.
Packing
Layers, not outfits. River cruise mornings on the top deck (my favorite place to be) can be cool, afternoons in town can be warm, and fall and spring weather changes its mind often. A light jacket, a sweater, and a scarf will do more for you than three extra outfits.
Walking shoes you've already broken in. European old towns are cobblestone. New shoes and cobblestones are not friends. Your tried and true sneakers are best.
A small day bag. Big enough for a water bottle, a layer, and your phone. Small enough that you forget you're carrying it.
Outlet adapters. Germany, France, and most of continental Europe use round two-prong plugs so you'll need a converter. Some ships also have U.S. outlets in the cabins but it varies by cruise line.
Leave the formal wear. River cruises are generally relaxed. Think 'nice dinner out at home,' not 'black tie'.
The week before
Make copies of your documents. Keep a photo of your passport on your phone and a paper copy in a separate bag from the original.
Share your itinerary with someone at home. The ship's name, the dates, and how to reach you.
Read what your advisor sends you. (I had to.) Everything you need is in there, in order, so that once you're traveling, you can handle things on your own without wondering what comes next. And if you have any questions - let's address them now before you're halfway across the world.
What you can stop worrying about
The language. Your guides speak English, the crew speaks English, and you'll never need to buy a train ticket in German.
Getting lost. The ship docks in or near town, the walking tours start right at the gangway, and the all-aboard time is posted clearly. Most cruise lines provide you a map of the town if you venture out on your own and will walk you through recommendations before you head out.
Being bored. There's a new town almost every day. The downtime is a perk, not a bummer.
Doing it 'wrong.' There's no wrong way to spend an afternoon on a river cruise. Nap, read, walk, watch the scenery. All correct.
The point of all this
The goal isn't to be managed through your trip. It's to arrive prepared enough to relax. When the prep is handled, the trip gets to be what you actually wanted: time together, somewhere beautiful, without a knot in your stomach.
The best part about having a travel advisor plan your trip - is not having to worry about the list above and if you forgot anything.
When I tell my clients how amazing it is to sail the Seine on a river cruise, I can almost see the look of wonder on their face as they try to place the town names: Conflans. Les Andelys. Caudebec-en-Caux and more.
Here's what I always say: most of the towns on a river cruise....you've never heard of. That's not a problem...it's kind of the point. The towns aren't what you'll remember. The experiences are!
So instead of walking through a list of ports, here's what a Seine river cruise actually gives you, and whether it's the right trip for you.
The shape of the trip
Most Seine sailings start and end in Paris, then follow the river west through the Normandy countryside toward the coast before looping back. Some add hotel nights in Paris before or after the cruise, which I highly recommend.
You unpack once. Paris and Normandy come to you.
The experiences (not the towns)
Standing on the Normandy beaches. For many people, this is the reason for the whole trip. Walking the beaches and visiting the American Cemetery with a guide who knows the history is quiet, heavy, and unforgettable. Doing it on your own means navigating train stations, transportation, and timing everything just right. On a river cruise, it's already arranged for you and they've perfected every moment.
Monet's garden in Giverny. The house and gardens that inspired the water lily paintings.
Rouen. A medieval old town with half-timbered houses, a Gothic cathedral Monet painted over and over, and the square where Joan of Arc was executed. (Some people know the name Rouen...Fewer know how much is packed into it.)
Honfleur. A small harbor town with tall, narrow houses lined up along the water. It's the kind of place you'll photograph from every angle and still not capture. Every one of your photos you post on social media have the caption 'photos don't do it justice'.
Normandy's food and drink. Apple orchards, cider, calvados, and cheeses you've been mispronouncing for years (me too).
Paris. You know this one. The difference is that you'll see it without juggling train schedules or hotel changes.
Why a river cruise works so well here
Normandy is one of the harder regions in France to do on your own. The sites are spread out, the countryside is rural, and much of what matters, like the beaches and the small villages, isn't where the trains go.
A river cruise solves that. The ship docks near the towns, guides handle the history, and transfers to the places the river doesn't reach are arranged for you.
Of course - each cruise line is different, so knowing which one is right for you gets a little tricky to figure out. Unless, of course, you do this for a living. That's where I come in.
If Paris and Normandy has been on your someday list for far too long - a river cruise might be just the perfect trip for you. Let's chat.
