While the beauty of Sandals Grande Antigua and the surrounding area was enough to make this a dream vacation, an unexpected experience turned this trip into something far more meaningful. Just days before I arrived in Antigua, I had learned about an incredible animal rescue mission that was taking place on the island to help Dogs and Cats.

Dogs and Cats of Antigua, Inc is a registered non-profit working out of St.John’s, Antigua.​ They hope to create an Antigua where starving and diseased stray dogs and cats are no longer the norm. They hope to create communities with healthy animals that are loved and wanted and their population growth controlled. An island that is truly a paradise for all Gods’ creatures.  They are doing this one dog and one cat at a time, and for however long it takes.

Their Mission:

Our mission is to create a network of likeminded individuals across the island to assist animals in distress and increase the welfare and protection of dogs and cats on the island, through feeding, veterinarian assistance, spay and neutering, fostering and rehoming.

We are also dedicated to educating proper animal care, stopping animal abuse, and promoting healthy and positive human and animal relationships to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Antigua is home to many stray animals, and over the years, their animal rescue organization has worked tirelessly to care for these animals and provide them with the love and attention they deserve. I was so moved by the stories I had read and heard from locals and travelers alike that I decided to get involved with one of the rescue groups.

Operation: Help Dogs and Cats of Antigua

It all began when I saw a post from a local animal rescue group on social media, urgently needing volunteers to help transport rescued animals from Antigua to new homes in the U.S. Twi, a sweet puppy living on the streets of Antigua, was one of the animals in need of a travel buddy. She had struggled with her siblings to survive in harsh conditions, and the rescue group was working hard to give her a second chance. Without hesitation, I reached out to offer my help, knowing this was a mission I couldn’t pass up.

After a few phone calls and filling out the necessary forms, I was officially chosen to accompany Twi on her journey. As my departure day approached, I prepared by packing a suitcase full of puppy formula, which was badly needed by the rescue volunteers. This simple act would make a huge difference in the lives of the many hungry puppies still waiting for their chance at life.

On the day of departure, I met the rescue team at the airport in Antigua. The farewell was bittersweet as I said my goodbyes to the amazing sanctuary team, knowing I was taking Twi one step closer to her forever home. As we boarded the plane to the United States, I reflected on the incredible journey we were about to complete together. Twi, calm and nestled at my feet, was no longer the malnourished pup the volunteers had met on the streets of Antigua. Her transformation was a testament to the resilience of both animals and humans. She had come so far, and our journey was about much more than just relocating her—it was about love, perseverance, and the powerful sense of community that had made this possible.

The suitcase I carried was greeted with overwhelming gratitude by the rescue volunteers when they received the puppy formula. They called it “gold,” knowing it would help save many lives. It was astonishing to see how something so simple could create such a huge impact, and the relief in their eyes reminded me of the ripple effect kindness can have in the world.

As I sat on the plane, I reflected on how deeply this experience had touched me. Twi was not just another rescued puppy; she was a living reminder of how compassion, teamwork, and dedication can change lives. This journey wasn’t just about her new chapter—it was about our chapter together, a journey that showed how love and care transcend all boundaries. Every life is worth saving.
