Some of the top activities Costa Rica has to offer...
You want to visit Costa Rica! Awesome, we can help get you there. But one of the questions we’ll ask in helping you do so is what you’d like to see and do there. Relax? Explore nature? Seek adventure? All the above and more? Probably. There is just so much available, we’ll need to have a serious discussion on what your priorities are. To help we’ve put together a list of eight of the best activities to do during your visit. After reading let us know what’s on the top of yours!
8 Great Activities Costa Rica Has To Offer
1. Hiking – An activity that likely is top of mind when you think of Costa Rica and there certainly is no shortage of places to do so. Volcanoes, beaches, cloud forests – the choice is yours. Once that’s settled, think about the level of difficulty you’re comfortable with. These two things will help in the best recommendation. Additionally, it is suggested you consider guided hikes. Your expert leader will be able to provide general assistance and a trained eye to spot wildlife.
2. Surfing – Surfers from around the world frequent Costa Rica year-round because of its warm waters and waves. Choose your coast – Pacific or Caribbean, select your level of experience – beginner, intermediate, or advanced. We can even make some recommendations. If you’re in need of a lesson, they’re typically easy to find, even just by stepping foot on some beaches!
3. Snorkeling and Scuba – Wildlife sightings aren’t limited to land. There are 7,000+ marine species that can be found in Costa Rica’s surrounding waters. So, it is no surprise that it is on the top of the list for water activities. If you’re a snorkeler, think about if you’d like to do so by boat or shore. If a diver, we can help recommend dive sites. Just let us know your level of experience.
4. Whitewater Rafting – Costa Rica provides a stunning background for this adventure. There are a few areas that would be recommended if this is something you’d like to do. Beginner or advanced, let us know what intensity of rapids you’re comfortable with, and we can point you in the right direction. If the kiddos are up for the challenge, there are some options that are suitable for them too. It’s a great family activity!
5. Visit Waterfalls – Some of the most picturesque sights in Costa Rica can be found at its numerous waterfalls. After all, there’s something so magical about water cascading over a cliff to the pools below. There are plenty of options to choose from, just keep in mind a few things. Some falls will require a hike to access, entrance fees will vary, and some allow swimming while others do not. Also consider a guided tour if you won’t have access to a rental car during your stay.
6. Zip Lining – If you’ve Googled “excursions in Costa Rica” you’ve likely seen a picture of someone effortlessly flying over green canopy, rivers, and cliffs. It’s a very popular activity that can be found all over the country. You should expect a safety demo and a short hike. Then you’ll glide line by line, each getting a little longer than the one before. If you’re an adrenaline seeker this is a must do! If not, we wouldn’t recommend it. Do not invest money in something if you’re not 100% comfortable with.
7. Bird Watching – It isn’t unusual for people to travel to Costa Rica for this very reason. Some enthusiasts even build a whole itinerary around this activity. There is 900+ species and most often seen will likely be toucans, macaws, and hummingbirds. Because the country is so eco-diverse, make a couple of watching stops. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera!
8. Yoga – Yes, you read that right! Costa Rica is indeed a haven for yoga lovers. You could see or take a class quite literally anywhere – a resort, beach, volcano, or rainforest. If you’re a beginner, give it a try at least once. If you’re a wellness enthusiast and it’s your reason for travel, it belongs on your list. Think wellness retreat, group trip for your studio, location for instructor training or continuing education.
There you have it, some of the best that Costa Rica has to offer! Of course, there’s a ton more that isn’t listed, so if you have any questions let us know. If you’re ready to explore all that Costa Rica has to offer, please feel free to reach out!

If you’ve ever visited Fiji, you know that the local food is a flavorful and vibrant mix of tropical ingredients, fresh seafood, and rich spices. One dish that stands out in traditional Fijian cuisine is Pumpkin Curry—a comforting, aromatic dish that combines the natural sweetness of pumpkin with fragrant spices, coconut milk, and a hint of heat.
Fijian pumpkin curry is a vegetarian dish, making it a great option for both meat-eaters and those who prefer plant-based meals. The simplicity of the ingredients, combined with the depth of flavor, makes it a perfect dish to recreate at home. Plus, it’s a great way to introduce a little piece of the Pacific Islands into your kitchen.
Ready to dive into this delicious Fijian recipe? Let’s get started!
Ingredients You’ll Need for Fijian Pumpkin Curry
For the curry base:
1 medium-sized pumpkin (about 1 kg or 2.2 lbs), peeled, seeded, and cut into cubes (you can also use butternut squash)
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1-inch piece of fresh ginger, grated
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or coconut oil for a more authentic touch)
1 can (400 ml) of coconut milk
1 cup vegetable broth or water
1 tablespoon curry powder (Fijian-style curry powder if you can find it, or your favorite curry powder blend)
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon cumin powder
1-2 fresh green chilies, chopped (optional for added heat)
Salt to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
For garnish:
Fresh cilantro (coriander) leaves
Optional: a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon juice for added zing
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Pumpkin
Start by peeling and removing the seeds from your pumpkin. Cut it into bite-sized cubes. If you’re using a squash variety like butternut, the process is the same. The pumpkin should cook down easily in the curry, so you want to cut it into uniform pieces to ensure even cooking.
Step 2: Heat the Oil and Sauté Aromatics
In a large pot or deep skillet, heat the vegetable oil (or coconut oil) over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until they soften and turn translucent.
Add the garlic and ginger to the pot, and sauté for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant. The combination of garlic, ginger, and onions will form the base of your curry’s aromatic flavor.
Step 3: Add the Spices
Now it’s time to bring in the spices! Add the curry powder, turmeric, ground coriander, and cumin to the pan. Stir them into the onions, garlic, and ginger mixture, and cook for 1-2 minutes. This step helps to release the essential oils and aromas from the spices, which gives your curry its rich depth of flavor.
If you like a bit of heat in your curry, toss in the chopped fresh green chilies. Adjust the number of chilies based on your personal preference for spice.
Step 4: Add the Pumpkin
Add your cubed pumpkin to the pot and toss it in the spice mixture. Stir everything well to ensure the pumpkin is coated with the spices and oil. You’ll want to let the pumpkin cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step 5: Pour in the Coconut Milk and Broth
Next, pour in the coconut milk and vegetable broth (or water) into the pot. The coconut milk gives the curry a rich, creamy texture, while the broth helps it cook and creates a lovely sauce. Stir everything together, making sure the pumpkin is submerged in the liquid.
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the curry cook for 20-25 minutes, or until the pumpkin is tender and cooked through. The pumpkin will start to break down and create a naturally thick, velvety sauce.
Step 6: Season and Adjust
Once the pumpkin is tender, taste the curry and adjust the seasoning. Add salt to taste, and feel free to add a pinch of black pepper for an extra kick. If you prefer a more intense curry flavor, you can add a little more curry powder at this stage.
If the curry sauce is too thick, you can add a little more broth or water to reach your desired consistency.
Step 7: Garnish and Serve
When the curry is done, remove it from the heat and stir in a handful of freshly chopped cilantro leaves for a burst of fresh flavor. If you like, you can squeeze a little lime or lemon juice over the top for an added touch of brightness.
Serve your Fijian pumpkin curry hot with a side of steamed rice (traditionally, coconut rice pairs wonderfully with this dish). You can also enjoy it with some traditional Fijian roti (flatbread) or naan to scoop up the creamy curry sauce.
Tips for the Perfect Fijian Pumpkin Curry:
Sweetness of the Pumpkin: The natural sweetness of pumpkin plays a central role in the flavor of the curry, balancing out the spices. If you want to enhance the sweetness, you can add a small spoonful of brown sugar or honey to the curry while it simmers.
Adjust the Spice: If you’re not a fan of heat, you can skip the fresh chilies altogether, or remove the seeds to reduce their spiciness. For those who love a kick, you can even add a dash of chili powder or cayenne pepper to spice things up.
Vegan/Vegetarian-Friendly: This dish is naturally vegan and vegetarian, thanks to the coconut milk and plant-based ingredients. You can also make it gluten-free by serving it with rice or gluten-free flatbread.
Try Other Vegetables: If you want to make the curry heartier or experiment with different flavors, you can add other vegetables like carrots, eggplant, or sweet potatoes to the mix. They complement the pumpkin beautifully and absorb the curry flavors wonderfully.
Why Fijian Pumpkin Curry is a Must-Try Dish
Fijian pumpkin curry offers a delightful combination of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors, all wrapped up in a creamy coconut sauce. It’s a dish that brings together the best of Fiji’s agricultural abundance, with ingredients that are both locally sourced and globally loved. The recipe is simple enough to make at home, but it also transports you to the tropical islands of Fiji, where the sun is warm, the air is fragrant, and the food is as vibrant as the culture itself.
So, whether you’re planning a trip to Fiji or simply craving a taste of the islands, Fijian pumpkin curry is the perfect way to enjoy the tropical flavors and warm hospitality of the Pacific. Ready to plan an authentic Fijian experience? Contact me for a complimentary quote!

Heading to a tropical destination? Whether you're escaping to a beach resort, exploring lush rainforests, or embarking on a tropical island getaway, packing the right essentials can make all the difference in ensuring you have an unforgettable vacation. Tropical climates are known for their warm temperatures, high humidity, and sudden rain showers, so being prepared is key.
Here’s the ultimate packing list to help you enjoy the sun, sand, and sea without a hitch.
1. Clothing for Comfort and Style
Tropical vacations mean a relaxed, laid-back vibe, but it’s still important to pack practical, comfortable, and breathable clothes. Here's what you’ll need:
Lightweight, Breathable Clothing
Shorts and Tank Tops: Go for cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics to keep you cool. These will be your go-to staples for daytime activities.
Sundresses: A flowy sundress is perfect for casual dinners, beach outings, or evening strolls.
Swimwear: Pack at least two swimsuits so you always have a dry one ready. Consider a swimsuit cover-up for trips to the pool or beach.
Lightweight Trousers or Skirts: These are great for cooler evenings or when you want extra sun protection during outdoor excursions.
Rash Guard: If you plan on doing water activities like snorkeling or paddleboarding, a rash guard offers sun protection and comfort.
Light Sweater or Cardigan: While it’s warm most of the time, some tropical destinations have cool evenings or air-conditioned spaces.
Flip-flops and Water Shoes: Essential for the beach and poolside, but if you're exploring rocky areas or hiking, water shoes will come in handy.
Sleepwear & Loungewear
Sleep Shorts or Light Pajamas: Stay comfortable at night with breathable fabrics.
Light Robe: A lightweight robe is perfect for moving from the pool to your room.
2. Footwear for Every Occasion
While flip-flops are essential for the beach, you’ll want to be prepared for other activities too. Here’s what to pack:
Flip-flops or Sandals: Great for the beach, pool, or strolling around the resort.
Water Shoes: If you plan on engaging in water sports, these will protect your feet when walking in rocky or slippery areas.
Comfortable Walking Shoes: If you’re planning any hikes or long excursions, a supportive pair of sneakers or sandals is essential.
Dress Shoes or Flats: For dinners or special outings, a pair of stylish but comfortable shoes will be useful.
3. Essential Accessories
Don’t forget these tropical vacation must-haves:
Sun Protection
Sunscreen: A broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is a must to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Don’t forget lip balm with SPF!
Sunglasses: Polarized sunglasses will reduce glare and protect your eyes from UV rays.
Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is perfect for added sun protection while you’re out exploring or lounging by the pool.
Aloe Vera Gel: In case you get a little too much sun, aloe vera will help soothe and moisturize your skin.
Bags and Carry-alls
Beach Bag: A large, waterproof bag to hold your sunscreen, towels, snacks, and books.
Small Backpack or Daypack: Ideal for day trips, hikes, or exploring the local area.
Waterproof Phone Case: Protect your phone from water, sand, and drops with a waterproof case or pouch.
Dry Bag: Perfect for keeping your electronics and valuables safe while doing water activities.
4. Toiletries & Health Essentials
While it’s easy to grab toiletries at your destination, you’ll want to make sure you pack the essentials before you go.
Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Wash: Go for travel-sized versions to save space. Consider a sulfate-free formula for hair care in humid climates.
Bug Repellent: Tropical locations often have mosquitoes, especially around dawn and dusk. Look for a repellent with DEET or natural alternatives like citronella.
Hand Sanitizer & Wet Wipes: These come in handy when you’re out and about or don’t have access to water.
Prescription Medications: Make sure to bring enough of your prescribed medications, plus a copy of the prescription just in case.
First-Aid Kit: Pack the basics like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any other medications you might need.
Travel-Size Laundry Detergent: If you're staying for an extended period, travel detergent can help keep clothes fresh without needing to pack a ton of outfits.
5. Electronics & Entertainment
If you plan on capturing every moment, enjoying some downtime, or staying connected, here's what you'll need:
Camera: Whether it’s a DSLR, GoPro, or smartphone, bring a camera to capture the beauty of your tropical destination.
Phone & Charger: If you're going to rely on your phone for navigation, photography, or communication, make sure to bring your charger.
Portable Power Bank: Long excursions might take you away from charging sources, so a power bank is essential for keeping your devices charged.
E-Reader or Books: Perfect for reading on the beach or by the pool.
6. Miscellaneous Items You’ll Be Glad You Packed
Some items are easy to overlook but can be lifesavers when traveling to a tropical destination:
Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated in the heat! Many resorts offer refill stations, and it's better for the environment than constantly buying plastic bottles.
Travel Guide or Map: If you want to explore beyond the resort, having a local guide or map can help you find the best spots.
Snacks: Energy bars, nuts, or dried fruit come in handy for long excursions or as a quick snack between meals.
Towels: Some resorts provide towels, but having an extra quick-dry towel can be useful for beach or poolside use.
Travel Locks: For securing your luggage, a simple lock can provide extra peace of mind.
7. Important Documents
Before heading to your tropical paradise, be sure to pack the necessary travel documents:
Passport: If you're traveling internationally, don’t forget your passport. Make sure it’s valid for at least six months from your departure date.
Travel Insurance: It's always a good idea to have travel insurance for health, trip cancellation, or unexpected events.
Tickets & Itinerary: A printed or digital copy of your flight, accommodation, and any activity confirmations will keep things organized.
Credit Cards & Cash: While many places accept cards, it’s wise to have some local currency on hand for small purchases.
Packing Tips for a Stress-Free Vacation
Roll Your Clothes: Rolling clothes instead of folding them helps save space and reduces wrinkles.
Use Packing Cubes: These help keep your clothing organized and compress your clothes to maximize suitcase space.
Pack Light: Tropical destinations tend to have casual vibes, so don’t overpack! Stick to versatile pieces that can mix and match.
Check the Weather: Tropical weather can vary—rain is common, so be prepared for both sunshine and showers.
Conclusion: Ready for Your Tropical Escape!
With the right packing list, your tropical vacation will be stress-free, comfortable, and filled with unforgettable moments. In today’s world, booking a vacation has never been easier with the abundance of online tools and booking sites. But with so many options, the process can often feel overwhelming—deciding on the best destination, navigating confusing flight options, comparing hotel prices, and trying to find the perfect experiences can be time-consuming and stressful. While it may seem like a good idea to book everything yourself, there are several key reasons why using a travel agent can save you time, money, and stress, while ensuring you have the best travel experience possible.
Here’s why you should consider using a travel agent for your next trip:
1. Expert Advice and Personalized Recommendations
Travel agents are experts in the field of travel, with extensive knowledge about destinations, accommodations, activities, and the latest trends. They’ve likely visited the places you’re considering or have access to firsthand accounts from other travelers. Whether you’re looking for a quiet beach getaway, a family-friendly vacation, or a luxury escape, a travel agent can offer personalized recommendations based on your specific needs, preferences, and budget.
For example, you might not know the difference between an all-inclusive resort and a boutique hotel in a specific destination, but a travel agent does. They can help you choose the right type of accommodation and experiences that best suit your style and expectations, taking the guesswork out of the equation.
2. Time Savings
Planning a trip can take hours of research, comparing prices, reading reviews, and organizing all the logistics. A travel agent does all the heavy lifting for you. They can provide you with a curated list of options that meet your criteria, saving you countless hours that you could spend doing something you enjoy, instead of sifting through endless websites.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a multi-country tour, a travel agent can efficiently put together all the details in one place, from flights and accommodations to transportation and excursions, so you don’t have to spend days organizing it yourself.
3. Access to Exclusive Deals and Discounts
Travel agents often have access to exclusive deals that aren’t available to the general public. Because of their relationships with hotels, airlines, and tour operators, they can unlock special promotions, discounts, and perks like:
Room upgrades at hotels
Complimentary breakfast or spa credits
Early check-in/late check-out privileges
Private tours or excursions
They also know how to leverage these relationships to get better value for your money, so you may end up with more luxury for less cost compared to booking directly through online platforms.
4. Stress-Free Planning and Handling of Details
From ensuring you’ve got the correct visas to helping you find the most convenient flight connections, travel agents take care of the nitty-gritty details, which can be a headache for many travelers. They’ll help you avoid common pitfalls, such as booking a flight with multiple layovers or missing a connecting flight due to tight transfer times. They also handle tricky time zones, seasonal changes, and any sudden changes in travel restrictions.
Additionally, travel agents can help you plan multi-destination trips or complex itineraries, such as a round-the-world journey, with ease. They know the best routes, flight options, and can organize everything from local transportation to guided tours to make sure your trip flows seamlessly.
5. Expert Crisis Management and Support
When unexpected issues arise—like flight cancellations, lost luggage, or changes in weather conditions—a travel agent is your first line of defense. Instead of scrambling on the phone with airlines or hotel chains, your agent can handle the situation for you, using their expertise and industry connections to resolve problems quickly.
If a storm causes a delay, or a flight is overbooked, travel agents have the resources to rebook your flights or arrange alternate accommodations, saving you time and stress. In situations like this, having an experienced travel agent who can step in and solve the problem makes a huge difference in your overall travel experience.
6. Travel Insurance and Protection
Travel agents don’t just book your trip—they also help ensure that you’re protected throughout the journey. They can recommend and arrange the right type of travel insurance based on your trip’s needs, whether it’s for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost luggage. While many travelers skip this step, having travel insurance is an important safety net, especially for international trips.
If anything goes wrong while you’re traveling, travel insurance can provide peace of mind, knowing you’ll be covered for unexpected expenses like medical bills, trip interruptions, or canceled flights.
7. VIP Treatment and Special Perks
One of the best reasons to use a travel agent is the VIP treatment you’ll often receive. Travel agents have access to special concierge services and can offer you priority booking, private transfers, and even early access to tickets for attractions. For example, if you’re heading to a popular destination like Paris or Rome, your agent might arrange special entry into museums without waiting in long lines, or secure reservations at highly sought-after restaurants.
They also often arrange personalized itineraries based on your interests, ensuring that you experience the best of the destination in the most efficient way possible. It’s like having a local guide and a concierge at your service, but without having to pay extra for these added services.
8. Stress-Free Group Travel Planning
Planning group travel—whether for a family reunion, a destination wedding, or a corporate retreat—can be especially overwhelming. Travel agents make organizing group trips much easier, ensuring that everyone is on the same page and gets the arrangements that fit their needs. From booking flights for a large group to negotiating discounts on hotel rooms or group tours, a travel agent handles the logistics, freeing you from the headache of managing multiple reservations.
They can also handle things like special dietary needs, room assignments, and activity scheduling to ensure that the group enjoys a smooth, hassle-free experience.
9. Local Insights and Hidden Gems
Many travel agents have visited the destinations they recommend, which means they can provide you with insider tips on what to see and do beyond the usual tourist attractions. They know the best local restaurants, hidden gems, and unique experiences that aren’t always found in guidebooks or online reviews.
Whether you’re interested in cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, or trying out local cuisine, your travel agent can offer recommendations tailored to your interests that go far beyond the typical tourist spots.
10. Peace of Mind and a More Enjoyable Trip
Above all, using a travel agent allows you to enjoy your trip without worrying about the logistics. When everything is organized for you, you can focus on what truly matters: making memories. Knowing that an expert has handled the details, you can relax and embrace the adventure, knowing that you’re in good hands every step of the way.
In Conclusion: Why You Should Consider Using a Travel Agent
While booking travel online can seem like a great option, it can also be time-consuming, frustrating, and overwhelming. A travel agent offers personalized, stress-free planning and access to exclusive deals, insider knowledge, and expert support throughout your journey.
Whether you're planning a short weekend getaway, a bucket-list vacation, or a complex multi-destination trip, a travel agent ensures that your travel experience is smooth, enjoyable, and unforgettable. And in the rare case that something doesn’t go according to plan, they’re there to handle it for you, giving you the peace of mind to truly enjoy your travels.
So, if you want to take the stress out of travel and maximize your vacation experience, consider reaching out to a travel agent—they’re your ticket to a hassle-free getaway.
