Kauai Changed My Mind: How a 4‑Night Trip Made It My New Favorite Hawaiian Island
Kauai surprised me — in the best possible way.
I first visited the Garden Isle nearly 20 years ago when my kids were young. It was March, it was cold and rainy, and my memories were mostly gray skies and soggy beach towels. I remembered the blowhole, the chickens, a few scenic drives, and not much else. Honestly, I left thinking Kauai just wasn’t for me.
Fast forward to April 2026. My husband and I booked a very last‑minute trip — just four nights, three full days — to give Kauai another chance.
And you know what? I fell completely in love. Kauai is now my new favorite Hawaiian island.
If you’re considering a trip to Kauai — whether for beaches, hiking, food, or pure relaxation — here’s exactly what we experienced, what surprised me, and how I help clients plan the perfect Kauai vacation.
Arrival Day: Sunshine, Sea Turtles & Settling Into Poipu
We landed around 1:30 p.m. local time and made a quick stop at Walmart near the airport to stock our kitchenette with breakfast items, snacks, water, and drinks. From there, it was a short drive to Poipu, where we stayed at the Sheraton Kauai Villas — right across the street from the full‑service Sheraton Kauai Resort on the beach.
Jet lag was hitting hard, so we walked down to Poipu Beach for golden hour to help us stay awake. The light on the south shore is magical — warm, soft, and glowing across the sand and water.
And then came the moment that instantly shifted my mood: the Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) arriving to rest on the beach.
Why sea turtles come to Poipu Beach
Poipu is one of Kauai’s most reliable turtle‑spotting beaches. The honu come ashore at sunset to rest overnight, returning to the ocean at sunrise. They’re protected by law, so visitors must keep a respectful distance — but watching them settle into the sand is unforgettable.
We turned in early, ready to explore the island with fresh eyes.
Day 1: Waimea Canyon — “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”
With the time change, we were up early and enjoyed a sunrise beach walk before heading out on our self‑guided driving tour of Waimea Canyon and Kokeʻe State Park.
The weather was perfect — sunny skies and spring‑like temperatures.
Driving Waimea Canyon on Your Own
We chose to rent a car rather than join a group tour, and I’m so glad we did. It gave us the freedom to stop where we wanted, linger when we felt like it, and enjoy the views without rushing.
There are four major lookouts along the drive, each more breathtaking than the last. Your parking pass from the first stop covers all the others — just leave it on your dashboard.
The final lookout, at the literal end of the road, offers a sweeping view over the Nā Pali Coast. It’s the closest you can get by car, and it’s spectacular.
To get even closer, you’d need to hike, take a boat tour, or book a helicopter — all incredible options for longer trips. But for our short stay, this was perfect.
We made it back to Poipu in time for a sunset dinner, relaxed and happy.
Day 2: Beach, Pool & A Monk Seal Comedy Show
Vacation mode officially activated.
We grabbed beach chairs around 8 a.m. and settled in for a relaxing day. Another morning walk brought one of the most entertaining encounters of the trip: two Hawaiian monk seals lounging on the sand.
One was clearly trying to nap. The other was clearly trying to play. It felt like watching siblings — the younger poking, the older getting increasingly annoyed. We couldn’t stop laughing. Watch the video linked on the right!
We swam in the ocean, but it’s important to note: Kauai’s waves can be strong. Always swim at lifeguarded beaches, pay attention to posted conditions, and never turn your back on the ocean.
Day 3: North Shore Road Trip — Wailua, Hanalei & Haʻena
We headed north through Wailua, Princeville, and Hanalei toward Haʻena State Park — home to the famous Kalalau Trail.
Important: Haʻena State Park Requires Reservations
Parking reservations open 30 days in advance at midnight Hawaii time, and they sell out quickly. Because our trip was last‑minute, we couldn’t secure one. The alternative is to park at a lower lot and take the shuttle — a great option if hiking is a priority.
Even without hiking, the drive was stunning.
Highlights of the North Shore
Wailua Falls — lush, green, and incredibly close to the road
Hanalei — charming, quiet, and framed by dramatic emerald peaks
Shave ice — a must, and we found one of the best spots
We returned to Poipu in time for sunset, tired but happy — and even with the classic North Shore traffic on the way back, the scenery made every slow stretch feel worth it.
Where We Ate: Kauai Food Highlights
Food is always a big question for Hawaii travelers. Here’s where we stopped — the good, the great, and the “probably wouldn’t return.”
Puka Dog (Poipu)
A Kauai classic. Toasted bun, garlic sauce, tropical relishes, lilikoi mustard. My favorite combo: Polish sausage + spicy garlic sauce + coconut relish + lilikoi mustard. Don’t skip the lemonade.
8E88 Thai & Poke (Food truck court)
Fresh, flavorful tuna poke bowl with sesame, spicy mayo, and furikake. A perfect post‑Waimea snack.
Aloha Sweet Delights (Kaumualii Hwy)
Malasadas, coconut hand pies, and pastries galore. A great stop for breakfast treats.
Keoki’s Paradise (Koloa)
Open‑air dining surrounded by palms, tiki torches, and koi ponds. I had the grilled ono with Hawaiian sweet potatoes — delicious. My husband loved the marlin fish & chips.
Tahiti Nui (Hanalei)
Featured on Diners, Drive‑Ins and Dives, and the reason we stopped — but honestly, the food and service were disappointing. With so many great options on Kauai, I wouldn’t return.
Wishing Well Shave Ice (Hanalei)
A beautiful setting with picnic tables and mountain views. I ordered the piña colada shave ice with macadamia nut ice cream and a snow cap — heavenly.
Porky’s Kauai (Koloa)
Simple menu, great flavors. We both ordered the #4: jasmine rice + kalua pork + sweet & hot BBQ sauce + pineapple. Friendly staff and live music nearby.
Daddy O’s (Lihue)
Our final stop on the way to the airport — and such a good choice. Their coconut macadamia nut pancakes were fluffy, rich, and full of that classic Hawaiian flavor you crave on your last morning. It’s the kind of breakfast that makes you wish you had one more day on the island.

Anne helped us with our son's destination wedding at Sandals Dunn's River in Jamaica. We had the best time. The resort is gorgeous and the food was really good. We really appreciate Anne's help with coordinating travel for those that attended the wedding. We look forward to booking a European River Cruise with her, as well as our other son's honeymoon (he proposed in Jamaica while we were there)! -Mary L.
Jamaica Getaway
5-stars! Anne helped me find a place for a long weekend getaway with my husband. She listened to the details I was looking for and suggested The Hideaway at Royalton. We really enjoyed the stay. It was exactly what I was looking for when I set out on planning the trip, but I’ve never been to an all inclusive or Jamaica so I wouldn’t have found it without her. The property was beautiful and the view from our room was spectacular. We really enjoyed the buffet dining room. The steak there was every bit as good as the steak we had at the steakhouse. -Leslie M.
Costa Rica Anniversary Trip
We had such an amazing experience in Costa Rica, thanks to Anne! She was nothing but great and super helpful with all of our questions and concerns. We were traveling international for the first time and she made the process very easy! We can’t wait to book our next one! -Gabbi R.
We recently went to the UK and Anne King at Vincent Vacations was invaluable in arranging our trip. Our flights were great, the accommodations were comfortable and centrally located to all we planned to do. Our tours were exactly what we wanted. Our private transport from the airport to the hotel and the hotel back to the airport were on time and personable. We will definitely use Vincent Vacations for our next big trip. -Karen E.
Aruba Winter Getaway
Anne King at Vincent Vacations did an amazing job not only helping us select and plan our vacation but also providing support all the way until we returned home. Her expertise, attention to detail, and prompt responses made the entire process stress-free for us. I am incredibly grateful for her assistance when we encountered a delayed flight situation—thanks to her, we actually arrived home 30 minutes earlier than our original flight! I will definitely be recommending Anne’s services to friends and family in the future! -T. Damis
Eastern Caribbean Cruise with Princess
5-stars! Anne and Vincent Vacations are excellent and highly recommended! Anne helped my wife Tiffany, our friends, and me plan a wonderful Eastern Caribbean cruise aboard the Enchanted Princess! It was a unique and unforgettable adventure! Thank you, Anne! -Anthony H.
Amsterdam & The Netherlands
Anne King at Vincent Vacations helped me plan a trip of a lifetime. I narrowed my travel destination to two places then Anne suggested the Netherlands and I was all in. She helped plan a seamless vacation including flights, hotel, transportation, museums and tours. This trip definitely exceeded my expectations. I will definitely use her and Vincent Vacations again. -Maryann R.
Iberostar Tucan - Riviera Maya
Multi-generation family vacation before Christmas 2023
We had a great experience and would highly recommend Iberostar Tucan. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean a comfortable. Pool and beach were both well stocked with seating so there was none of that “reserving your seats at dawn or there will be no where to sit”. The food was good and could be great depending on your individual preferences. Personally, I really enjoyed the Japanese Hibachi grill experience and the smokehouse BBQ was excellent. My oldest son thought the Smokehouse pulled pork was the best he’d ever had. Tiffany loved the Crème Brûlée at the Mediterranean restaurant, my 16 year old son thought the pizza crust at the Italian restaurant was the best. Buildings 14 and 15 have the best views, facing the interior jungle. There is an abundance of wildlife in the “jungle”. We were greeted each morning by acrobatic monkeys swinging through the canopy right outside our balcony. Peacocks and Lemurs are a common sight throughout the resort. There was even a big iguana living beneath the patio of our building (14) that greeted us each day basking in the sun. Transportation via Amstar both to and from the resort was great. Vehicles were in excellent shape, clean, comfortable and professional driven. We arrange an outing to Tulum via Amstar and our guide spoke both English and German to accommodate some of the German guest joining us on our trip to Tulum. Overall the resort was in great shape. I saw no indications of any deferred maintenance or lack of attention to the buildings or grounds. As mentioned previously, the staff were super friendly and helpful. We were always greeted with a smile and a “how can we help” attitude. We will definitely return someday. -Steve W.
Sandals Antigua Honeymoon
We had an epic time on our Honeymoon in Antigua at Sandals Antigua Grand Resort! Call Anne she was our travel agent and she made the trip so easy to plan and even helped us with a crazy dilemma that happened with our plane being late. She turned disaster into a great night for us! Please call Anne of you need help booking any trip!!!
-Patrick E.
Jamaican Honeymoon
My husband and I worked with Anne for our honeymoon to Jamaica and she was FANTASTIC! She was so easy to work with and SO knowledgeable on every question we asked. She took care of everything for all of our travels which made it so easy for us. We had never been out of the country before so we were a bit nervous and she made everything so seamless and easy. We will 100% go through her for all of our travels in the future! -Mallory C.
Antarctica Cruise
My family and I went on an cruise that Anne set up for us. From the plane tickets, transport from airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the port terminal, the cruise itself and the trip home. Everything went smooth for us. I wasn't sure on a couple of things, but I shouldn't of because we had no problems at all. We enjoyed our trip and time together because it was all taken care of. Just too many things to take care, so it was great that it was all handled for us. We will use Anne again. -Oldguy
Hilton Hawaiian Village - Oahu
5-stars!!! Every detail of our family vacation to Hawaii was a total success because of Anne! As a type-A traveler who takes relaxation very seriously, I would recommend Anne for anyone looking to get the most out of their vacation dollar. To start, Anne met with me to discuss my travel goals and 'must have's'. She then provide thorough options for varying price points that were ideal for our objectives. There was no pressure and she was always available for questions. I even had a last minute request that she was flexible in accommodating. We had a seamless airport transfer and even got upgraded once we got to the hotel, when I mentioned Anne and Vincent Travel! We ended up with the best room in the hotel. What I was most impressed with was the availability, time, and dedication Anne had to ensure our trip was completely worry-free. At one point, there was a miscommunication with a tour company and Anne immediately started working tirelessly to get it resolved in my favor. Although it may not always be the case, we were able to receive a $1K refund due to her efforts. All while me and my family never skipped a beat enjoying our dream island vacation. I will be contacting Anne for all my future travel and would recommend her for anyone who is looking to make the most of their travels!

Anne made the booking process seamless, we communicated our expectations and she more than delivered, and we’re not talking pizza! The travel app she provided with our schedule of events during our trip was super helpful and convenient as well. So don’t pull out your hair, when Anne can be there!

Jamaican Getaway
Our vacations was really really good. Was a blast every day--something different on a regular. We did the free excursions. It was super awesome overall. Thank you so much for helping us out. We will definitely get with you on our next trip out for Ocho Rios.
🌺 Where to Stay on Kauai: How to Choose the Right Resort for Your Vacation
The pictures have done their job. You’re officially ready to go to Kauai — the Garden Island filled with emerald mountains, golden beaches, and those dreamy Instagram sunsets. But once you’ve decided to book the trip, the next big question hits:
Where should you stay on Kauai?
Your best friend’s honeymoon, your brother’s golf getaway, or all those gorgeous Reddit and Instagram photos may have inspired you, but choosing the right resort depends on how you want to travel and what matters most to you: beach quality, convenience, romance, family‑friendly amenities, or overall value.
After spending time on Kauai recently, I’ve found that the South Shore (Poipu) and the East Side (Lihue/Wailua) offer the best mix of sunshine, beaches, and easy access to the island’s top sights. Below are my top four Kauai resorts — who they’re best for, what makes each special, and how to choose the right one for your trip.
🌴 Ko‘a Kea Resort on Poipu Beach
Best for: Couples, honeymoons, quiet luxury
Ko‘a Kea is a boutique luxury resort on one of Poipu’s best beaches, with fewer than 120 rooms. That creates an intimate, peaceful atmosphere perfect for romance. Honeymooners receive a lei greeting and personal escort to their room, setting the tone for a special stay.
Poipu Beach is just steps away, offering swimmable conditions most of the year, stunning sunrises and sunsets, and frequent visits from honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) and ‘īlio holo i ka uaua (Hawaiian monk seals —literally translating to “the dog that runs in rough water”).
You’re only 30 minutes from LIH airport and close to shopping, dining, golf, and marina excursions. Don’t miss sunrise yoga or the famous lemon soufflé pancakes at Red Salt.
Why book Ko‘a Kea: A quiet, upscale, beachfront escape designed for couples who want luxury without the crowds.
🌺 Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort (Poipu)
Best for: Families, multi‑gen groups, active travelers
Sheraton Kaua‘i sits on a beautiful stretch of Poipu Beach with excellent swimming conditions and a lively, family‑friendly atmosphere. With multiple dining options on property — plus favorites like Puka Dog and The Beach House nearby — you’ll never run out of places to eat. Frequent visitors consistently praise The Beach House for having the best sunset views on the island.
Activities are a major highlight: surf lessons, lei making, hula and ukulele classes, snorkeling, boogie boarding, and more. The on‑site luau is a huge perk since you don’t have to drive anywhere!
Room categories span a wide range of budgets, making it easy for families or groups to stay together without sacrificing comfort.
Why book Sheraton Kaua‘i: A beachfront resort with great swimming, tons of activities, and a moderate price point — ideal for families and couples who want energy and convenience.
🌅 Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i Resort (Lihue)
Best for: Travelers who want convenience, big‑resort amenities, and a great pool
Just minutes from the airport, Royal Sonesta offers a wide golden‑sand beach, calm bay waters, and dramatic mountain views. Sunrises here are spectacular.
This is a large, full‑service resort with multiple dining options, including Duke’s Kauai down the beach, plus restaurants within walking distance. The standout feature is the massive, lagoon‑style pool — one of the best on the island.
Because of its location, you can easily stay here without renting a car. If you do rent one, the hotel’s on‑demand shuttle makes pickup simple and can save you money on rental & parking fees.
Why book Royal Sonesta: A convenient, affordable beachfront resort with one of Kauai’s best pools — perfect for travelers who prefer lounging by the water over ocean swimming.
Best for: Value seekers, explorers, and travelers who love resort amenities
Located about 10 minutes north of the airport, the OUTRIGGER offers a relaxed, mid‑range resort experience with ocean views and a great central location for exploring the island.
While the ocean here isn’t swimmable due to strong currents, the resort makes up for it with four pools, a waterslide, a cascading waterfall, and a whirlpool. Many rooms have been recently renovated with fresh, modern Hawaiian décor.
Upgrading to the Voyager 47 Club adds exclusive lounge access with complimentary breakfast, evening cocktails, and upgraded amenities — the closest thing to an all‑inclusive experience on Kauai.
This location is ideal for day trips to the North Shore, including Wailua Falls, Kilauea Lighthouse, Hanalei Bay, and Hā‘ena State Park. The drive alone is worth it, with dramatic mountain peaks rising right beside the road.
Why book OUTRIGGER Kaua‘i: A great value for travelers who want a resort feel, updated rooms, and a central location for exploring — without needing a swimmable beach at the hotel.
🌺 Final Thoughts: Which Kauai Resort Is Right for You?
For romance and luxury: Ko‘a Kea
For families and activities: Sheraton Kaua‘i
For convenience and a huge pool: Royal Sonesta
For value and island exploration: OUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort

Whether you’re dreaming of a relaxing Poipu beach vacation, a 3–5 day Kauai itinerary filled with adventure, or a luxury Hawaii getaway with curated experiences, the Garden Isle delivers beauty, culture, and serenity at every turn. If Kauai is calling your name, I would love to help you plan a seamless, personalized trip designed around your travel style. There is a difference between reading about a destination and truly understanding it.
As a travel advisor, I don’t just research itineraries — I experience them. I walk the beaches, sail the rivers, explore the cities, and immerse myself in the culture so I can guide my clients with genuine and honest insight. This is how I transform vacations into meaningful, personalized experiences. And it’s why my clients can book their trips with confidence, knowing their recommendations come from real‑world experience, not guesswork.
Why Working With a Travel Advisor Who Travels Matters
Anyone can search online for “best resorts in Cancun” or “top Danube River cruises,” but those results don’t tell the whole story. When I’m on the ground, I’m paying attention to the details that matter to real travelers — the things you can’t always find in reviews or brochures.
What I look for when I travel:
The true atmosphere of a resort — is it lively, peaceful, romantic, or family‑focused?
Which river cruise has the best options for active sisters traveling together?
What is the food really like at an all-inclusive resort?
How does the service measure up with standards my clients expect?
What are the real differences in room categories at a resort or on a cruise?
These are the nuances that turn a vacation from “nice” into “unforgettable.”
A honeymoon couple may want pure romance and relaxation. Or they may want exciting activities and nightlife. A retired couple celebrating an milestone anniversary may not be bothered by children at the pool if the food and the beach are amazing. A multi-generation family planning a cruise together may be disappointed if the only activities offered are ballroom dance classes or an art auction.
Why This Matters for Your Vacation
My goal is simple: to help you travel in a way that feels right for you.
Not every resort fits every traveler. Not every cruise line fits every personality. Not every itinerary fits every pace.
When I’ve personally walked the paths, sailed the rivers, and stayed in the places you’re dreaming about, I can help you choose with clarity and confidence.
Your vacation shouldn’t just be researched — it should be understood.
Ready to Start Planning Your Next Journey? If you’re dreaming about your next getaway — whether it’s a relaxing beach escape, a cultural river cruise, or an unforgettable adventure — I’m here to help you find the vacation that fits you best.
